Why are the rewards for level 900 followers the same as at 850 but cost more resources?

Every mission at 880+ seems to cost double what they did at 850 but have the same rewards. I thought I was missing a counter or something and that was why the missions were costing so much more, but I wasn't. Should I have not upgraded my followers? Where is the logic in this?
