Why Blizzard developers are not "incompetent"

I’m tired of hearing this word being misused over the years. The word is thrown around whenever a game isn’t GOTY material, and some people think it's a big deal. Time to rant.I agree that you can criticize the prepatch, as it wasn't their best patch. I think everyone can agree with that. But I think calling the developers incompetent over it is a very ignorant statement to make.“Incompetence” refers to the inability to do something successfully, or the lack of skill required to do something. The current Blizzard developers are professionals. They are among the best in the world when it comes giving us quality digital entertainment. They have been hired by a massive company, which means you need to have the ability to do your work properly or else you get fired. These same developers created Legion, which is arguably one of, if not the best expansion to date. It brought WoW back from the dark days of WoD, and introduced a new era of endless content and competitive PvE. If you say Legion is just as bad as WoD or worse, you are lying to yourself and the numbers prove it.Would you say that these developers didn't succeed? Would you say that these developers lack skill? No of course not, because they're not incompetent. A few flaws in code or project management is not nearly enough of a reason to suddenly frame the developers as unfit for work. That's like a football coach removing one of their football players because they can't reliably land every pass. And finally, are you still playing WoW? Did you quit because the game was a little less than good quality for a couple days? No? Then you got your money’s worth, and the game is still in good hands./rantAs a side note, you could go on for several hours about why the prepatch went horribly, and another several hours about how game development is hard and “crunch” is unavoidable, but all I care about as a consumer is that it’s playable, and that I can still have fun. As long as I can play the game the way I want to play it while hotfixes or new features are in the works, then I have no complaints. That's just how I see things.
